Can Sony PS3 sales exceed PS2?

At present, Sony PlayStation 3 is the worst selling latest-generation video game console. However, Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., hopes that the latest system will eventually outsell its predecessor, Sony PlayStation 2 with 150 million units sold worldwide.

The original Sony PlayStation that was launched in 1994 was sold in 102 million units quantity worldwide, whereas the PlayStation 2, which was released in 2000, passed the 140 million units mark recently. The market of video games is increasing dramatically, particularly in the U.S., these days, hence, setting an unprecedented goal for the PlayStation 3 is not something strange.

But there is one thing that should be kept in mind when comparing PS2 and PS3: the former dominated the previous round of console war for the market and neither Microsoft Xbox  or Nintendo GameCube could rival it. Nowadays Nintendo Wii has outsold both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, moreover, the latter is still ahead of its Japanese rival in terms of installed base.

Game developers already recognize Wii as the winner of the current round and predict that both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will trail Nintendo’s latest video game system.

Using the simulation engine in the UEFA Euro 2008 videogame, EA Sports was able to test all 16 teams in the competition and determine that Portugal would come out on top. UEFA Euro 2008, the officially licensed videogame of the tournament, also predicted the following placements:

- UEFA EURO 2008 Champion: Portugal

- UEFA EURO 2008 Final: Portugal 2 Italy 1

- Golden Boot winner: Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal (5 goals)

Players around the globe will compare these astonishing statistics to the real world results as they unfold. The Final itself was an epic battle where Italy’s resilient defense was pitted against Portugese flair, with Portugal ultimately winning 2-1 to capture its first European championship. Goals from Deco (28th) and Ronaldo (63rd), his fifth goal of the tournament, staked Portugal to a 2-0 lead early in the second half before midfielder Andrea Pirlo scored in the 75th minute to bring the Italians to within one. Portugal survived a frantic final 15 minutes to capture the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

In the EA Sports simulation, old rivalries were reignited. France was beaten 2-0 by Italy in one semifinal, in a replay of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final won by the Italians 5-3 in penalty kicks. In the EA Sports simulation the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in a group stage match.

Portugal knocked off Germany 2-0 in the other semifinal.

Host countries Austria and Switzerland both failed to advance from the group round. Switzerland was the first country eliminated from the competition. Luck also ran out for Croatia in the group stage. After knocking off England in qualifying, Croatia had injury problems, losing star forward Eduardo among others, and failed to advance from Group B.

Japan to get new red PS2, blue PSPs & PS Eye

Sony will release a “Cinnabar Red” PlayStation 2, two “Metallic Blue” PSP packs and a PlayStation Eye bundle next month in Japan.

The platform holder will launch the limited edition red PS2 on July 3 at a recommended retail price of 16,000 yen. The light-weight system will feature an in-built AC adapter. In Japan the PS2 is still performing well sales wise – now in its ninth year on the market it regularly runs its successor close in the weekly hardware chart. More than 130 million PS2 units have been snapped up to date worldwide.

Following on July 17, SCEJ will release a “PSP Metallic Blue Value Pack” and a “PSP Metallic Blue 1 Seg Pack.” The limited edition handhelds will retail for 23,800 yen and 29,800 yen respectively. The former is billed as a starter pack, and will come with a pouch, hand strap, cloth, a 32MB memory stick and a D Terminal AV cable so users can watch content on their TVs. The latter pack will ship with the same accessories plus a 1 Seg TV tuner and a larger memory stick. In Japan the PSP has regularly dominated the hardware chart over the last few months. The blue PSPs are the same in color as the Madden PSP pack set to debut in the US in August.

On July 24 SCEJ will also release a PlayStation Eye bundle for PS3. Featuring a PS Eye camera and Memoushon, a software pack containing an image and sound editor and a range of casual games, it will retail for 5,000 yen.
